RÜFÜS DU SOL (DJ set)
Mixmag Lab London
Of course RÜFÜS DU SOL would bring their live set sensibility to a DJ booth in Mixmag's Lab London; we're here for the cinematic swell, the emotional release, and the quiet satisfaction of hearing our favorite album cuts in a club context. The room is bathed in that signature moody, blue-lit intimacy, a congregation for the heart-on-sleeve dancefloor brigade. This is a masterfully paced melodic house set, holding a steady 125 BPM and weaving primarily through the 12A and 7A Camelot keys to create a warm, harmonically rich tapestry. The energy balance—with mids at 0.35 and lows at 0.56—tells the story: this is about atmosphere and melody over brute force, a journey built on layered synths and yearning vocals.
Transitions are smooth and musical, often letting tracks breathe and build organically, a testament to their song-first approach. The harmonic progression is deliberate and uplifting, using key changes within the compatible 12A/7A sphere to gently elevate the mood without ever jarring the listener. The opening salvo of their own 'Surrender' with Curtis Harding is a bold, soulful statement of intent. Peppou's 'Beliefs', remixed by Patryk Molinari, is a deep, driving gem that perfectly bridges indie dance and house.
Ary Sya's '5 Am (Instrumental Mix)' offers a moment of serene, floating introspection, while Lulu & Alice's 'Choose Us' provides a percussive, almost balearic interlude. Dropping their own 'No Place' is the predictable but utterly effective emotional crescendo we all secretly crave. The set starts with the vulnerable croon of 'Surrender', climbs to a euphoric peak with the layered harmonies of LautLeise & Jan Clouds' 'U and I', and comedown concludes on the hopeful, rolling notes of their own 'Music is Better'.
