FLAC to MP3: a portable copy of a lossless file
FLAC is lossless: it compresses audio without discarding anything, which makes it the format of CD rips, Bandcamp downloads and hi-res purchases. MP3 copies take a fraction of the space and play on phones, car stereos and DJ gear that may not read FLAC.
Decoding happens on your device; the encode is constant-bitrate MP3 at 128, 192, 256 or 320 kbps, or V0 with a variable bitrate. A 44.1 or 48 kHz FLAC keeps its sample rate; a hi-res file is resampled, 88.2 kHz to 44.1 kHz and 96 or 192 kHz to 48 kHz, and 24-bit samples reach the encoder at full precision, with no reduction to 16 bits. A FLAC with more than two channels, 5.1 for example, is folded to stereo.
Since the source is lossless, the MP3 is only one lossy generation from the original. Keep the FLAC as your archive and make new MP3s from it when you need a different bitrate, rather than re-encoding an MP3. Embedded tags and cover art are not copied. The cap is 30 minutes of audio, and the decoded file must fit your device's memory; a long hi-res recording reaches that first, especially on a phone or tablet.
