MP3 to WAV: for tools that require PCM
Converting MP3 to WAV does not improve the sound. It is done because a tool asks for WAV: a hardware sampler or drum machine, CD-burning software, a radio or podcast upload system, or an audio editor that works on uncompressed files.
The MP3 is decoded on your device and written as 16-bit PCM WAV at the MP3's own sample rate, so a 44.1 kHz MP3 gives a 44.1 kHz WAV and a 48 kHz MP3 a 48 kHz WAV. Mono stays mono. A loud MP3 can decode to peaks above full scale; a 16-bit WAV has no room above 0 dBFS and clips them, while the 32-bit float option keeps them intact.
Expect the file to grow: at 44.1 kHz stereo, a 320 kbps MP3 becomes a WAV about 4.4 times its size, and a 128 kbps MP3 about 11 times. Every artifact of the MP3 encoding stays in the WAV, so if you still have the original WAV, FLAC or CD, convert from that. Tags are not copied. The converter takes MP3s up to 30 minutes long, provided the decoded audio fits your device's memory.
