MP4 to MP3: keep the sound, drop the picture
An MP4 is a video file: a picture track and, in most cases, an AAC sound track in one container. Converting it to MP3 keeps only the sound, which is what you want from a recorded talk, a live set, a rehearsal or a music video you mean to play on a phone, in a car or from a music library.
The sound track is decoded on your device and encoded as a constant-bitrate MP3 at 128, 192, 256 or 320 kbps, or as V0, the top variable-bitrate setting; 320 kbps is selected unless you change it. Without the picture the file shrinks to the size of its audio: about 2.4 MB per minute at 320 kbps, under 1 MB per minute at 128 kbps. The MP3 comes out at 44.1 or 48 kHz, and a 5.1 sound track is folded to stereo, which the result line states.
Limits: 30 minutes of audio, and the video file together with its decoded sound must fit your device's memory, which is smaller on a phone or tablet. A long or high-resolution video can reach the memory limit well before 30 minutes, so trim it first. The MP3 carries no title, artist or cover art.
