MP4 to WAV: a video's audio, ready to edit
Taking the audio of an MP4 out as WAV is the usual first step when that sound needs work: cleaning up dialogue, cutting a sample, lining up a second recording, or bringing a performance into a DAW or audio editor that does not open video files.
The sound track is decoded on your device and written as PCM WAV; the picture is dropped. An AAC track, the usual kind, becomes 16-bit WAV with a low-level dither, and a 24-bit lossless track stays at 24 bits. Because WAV stores samples uncompressed, editing and exporting it again adds no new compression loss. It cannot undo the compression the MP4 already applied: a WAV made from a 128 kbps AAC track holds what that track decodes to, in a much larger file.
Mono stays mono, and the WAV writer never folds surround down to stereo. Sizes grow fast: 16-bit stereo at 48 kHz takes about 11.5 MB per minute. Each input may run up to 30 minutes if your device has the memory to hold it decoded; a phone or tablet holds less. The WAV holds only audio, with no tags.
