WAV to MP3: smaller files for sharing and players
WAV is what DAWs, recorders and sample packs produce: uncompressed PCM, large and readable almost anywhere. MP3 is how a mix, a demo or a field recording travels by email, chat or upload, and how it fits onto a phone or a USB stick.
The WAV is decoded on your device and its full-precision samples are encoded at a constant 128, 192, 256 or 320 kbps, or at V0. A five-minute 44.1 kHz stereo WAV of about 53 MB becomes about 12 MB at 320 kbps and under 5 MB at 128 kbps. WAVs at 44.1 or 48 kHz keep their rate; 88.2 and 176.4 kHz files are resampled to 44.1 kHz, 96 and 192 kHz files to 48 kHz. A WAV of three to eight channels is folded to stereo with the standard speaker downmix, LFE left out.
Loops need care: the encoder delays the start and pads the end. The MP3's gapless header records both, so a player that reads it trims them; one that ignores it adds a short gap. Keep loops and stems as WAV. The input limit is 30 minutes, and the WAV must fit your device's memory once decoded: a long 24-bit or 96 kHz recording reaches that limit first, sooner on a phone or tablet.
