The Anjunadeep Edition 261 with Penelope & Daniel Curpen (Live
at Explorations, June 2019)
Another day, another Anjunadeep Edition to save us from our own chaotic playlists. Penelope and Daniel Curpen taking the helm at the Explorations festival means we're in for a sun-drenched, Balearic-tinged deep house session, and we are ready to be transported. Imagine the Greek sun on your skin, the scent of pine and salt in the air, and a crowd united by a shared, gentle sway to the rhythm. Technically, this is deep house with a warm, organic heart. The BPM averages a laid-back 122, with the mix frequently dwelling in the earthy, minor key of 9B to create a cohesive, introspective mood.
The energy is beautifully balanced: a solid 51% low-end provides a groovy foundation, 44% mids carry melodic and rhythmic complexity, and only 5% highs ensure a smooth, non-fatiguing listen. The mixing from Penelope and Curpen is fluid and musical, often letting acoustic elements and live-sounding percussion shine through the electronic framework across a BPM range from 120 to 162. The selections are a treasure trove. Christian Löffler's 'York' is a haunting, minimalist masterpiece that sets a deep tone. The Mr.
Belt & Wezol extended mix of 'New Millenium' injects a dose of funky, vocal-led energy. Samim's classic 'Heater' gets a sublime, driving remake from Tube & Berger, and Gorje Hewek & Izhevski's 'Zakkat' offers a moment of intricate, melodic techno fusion. Marsh & Wassu's epic 'Like You' serves as the emotional eleven-minute centrepiece. The journey begins in the deep end with an unknown opener, builds through Balearic and progressive highlights, and winds down with the quirky, percussive charm of Angel Stoxx's 'Breadholes'. The Anjunadeep Edition 261 live set from Explorations 2019 is a perfect capsule of the label's open-air, melodic deep house vibe.
