Tomorrowland Belgium 2017
Marshmello (Surprise)
The 'surprise' Marshmello set at Tomorrowland 2017 is the digital equivalent of finding a candy-colored rave cave in the middle of a festival—it's bright, loud, and engineered for maximum, uncomplicated joy. We can mock the helmet all we want, but the man understands the assignment: giving a mainstage crowd the festival EDM and future bass bangers they came for. The vibe is explosive and cartoonish, a sensory overload of pyro, confetti, and drops so predictable they become comforting. Technically, it's a sprint through pop-EDM's greatest hits, with a BPM average leaping around 148.8 and a harmonic base often found in the festival-friendly key of 12A.
The energy is notably mid-heavy, prioritizing those massive, squelching synth chords and vocal chops over subterranean bass or intricate high-end detail, resulting in a sound that's built to fill arenas. The mixing is fast and functional, a barrage of crowd-pleasers with little room for breath, perfectly suited for the 'hands up, jump!' command. For the tracklist completionists, it's a snapshot of 2017's festival landscape. Opening with the viral hip-hop of 'Broccoli' is a clever curveball, while Marshmello's own 'Find Me' and 'Alone' serve as the set's emotional (if saccharine) anchors.
The inclusion of harder stuff like Zomboy's 'Terror Squad' and the chaotic 'Wawa / Dadadada' adds some welcome grit, and the San Holo 'Light' remix provides a moment of melodic future bass respite. It all kicks off with the meme-ready 'Broccoli', builds to its peak with the undeniable, if overplayed, drop of 'Alone', and signs off with the more reflective tones of 'Moving On'.
